WhatsApp setup · Limited beta

WhatsApp calling is available to selected accounts while we test it. If your dashboard shows Family abroad, add Grandma’s full international number to the Trusted Circle. Then share the Ring Ring Club WhatsApp number from your dashboard.

  1. 1

    Grandma’s phone

She opens WhatsApp on her own phone.

  2. 2

    One WhatsApp number

She saves the Ring Ring Club WhatsApp number and calls it.

  3. 3

    Your child’s Ring Ring

The home phone rings. Your child picks up.

For accounts in the beta, her calls in are free on a paid plan.

To call her back, she needs to tap “Allow calls” after her first call. Your child then dials her normal number. Calls back use calling credit at 4¢/minute.

Taking Ring Ring with you?

Connect to Wi-Fi or a router. Turn on Travel mode before you go. Quiet Hours can follow local time.

Travel mode switches 911 off on that phone. In an emergency, use a local phone or 112 in most of Europe. Turn Travel mode off when you get home.

Questions

Does Grandma pay to call?

For accounts in the limited beta, incoming WhatsApp calls are free for her over her data or Wi-Fi, and free for you. They do not count toward your minutes. If she calls your child’s US number from a local phone, her phone company charges for that international call.

Which countries can my child call?

For accounts in the WhatsApp beta, almost all of them: every country except China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea and Syria, where WhatsApp calling is not available, and some networks (the United Arab Emirates, for one) block WhatsApp calls. Family in any country can still call your child’s US number from an ordinary phone. Ordinary landlines and mobiles need World Calling, which reaches 180 countries.

Can Grandma have her own Ring Ring abroad?

Yes, and it is the cheapest way to talk. Calls between Ring Ring phones are free and unlimited in both directions, over any open internet connection, and her phone needs no monthly plan. We ship to the US and Canada, so buy it here (from $59) and bring it on your next visit.

Can my child call her back on WhatsApp?

If your account is in the WhatsApp beta, yes. After she taps “Allow calls” in WhatsApp after her first call, your child dials her normal number on Ring Ring. Your child does not need a smartphone or WhatsApp.

What happens when calling credit runs out?

A call in progress ends when credit runs out. Wait for your next monthly World Calling credit. Accounts in the WhatsApp beta can also add a top-up. For accounts in the beta, incoming WhatsApp calls from family keep working.

Can someone outside the Trusted Circle call?

Only Trusted Circle numbers get through. A stranger is turned away before anything rings. Quiet Hours apply.

What if she has several grandchildren on Ring Ring?

If she is in several grandchildren’s Trusted Circles, a voice asks which child to ring when she calls the Ring Ring Club WhatsApp number.

Does family abroad need World Calling too?

No. They can use their ordinary phone, or WhatsApp if your account is in the beta. If they have a Ring Ring, calls between your phones are free and unlimited anywhere with a normal internet connection, even on Starter.

Can Grandma get a local number in her country?

Not today. Accounts in the WhatsApp beta can share the Ring Ring Club WhatsApp number instead.

Why do the minutes differ by country?

The same allowance buys different amounts of calling time depending on the country and the kind of phone. Mobile minutes also vary by network. The country comparisons show each country’s cheapest mobile option.
